Dear Reader,
Teaching writing to students is essential to the success of all students, but especially English Language Learners. I believe teachers already use many resources, accommodation and activities to effectively teach to ELLs. I think educators need more information on teaching writing specifically to English Language Learners. I feel I could undeniably be more educated on teaching writing to English Language Learners and ways to improve my teaching. I felt I could gain from investigating this topic further.
I began my research with thinking about ways I could change my teaching style to help English Language Learners. Students that are not fluent in English have to work harder and be more dedicated. They are struggling with learning the content and language so there must be a way the I could make that a little easier for them to be more success. I also thought about ways the students can help themselves with learning English and the academic content taught. I think modeling and encouraging to use writing in your personal life is something students can do on their own. The information I complied will help me in my future classroom. I know I am going to have diverse learners and want to be prepared to give them the best learning experience they deserve. I think encouraging student to write, be their selves, use expression, refer to their experiences, practice and feel comfortable is important to excellence. They will succeed and love to write!
Through my research I learned that proper writing instruction is essential for all students, but English Language Learners especially. Engaging young writers is the key; they need to feel comfortable writing and feel like it is fun and exciting. There are many accommodations that can be done to help ELLs and promote practical assessment, research and evaluation. Connecting research to practice for students not fluent in English will make them understand their thoughts and writing better. It is very important for teachers to report their findings and refer to the TESOLs English Proficiency Standards. There are several ways to teach writing and everyday things that will benefit them and help them grow! Modeling is extremely important so that the child knows exactly what is expected. There are many tips for teaching ELLs to write; ways they can do it on their own daily and things they can do at home as well to better their writing.
I discovered many more concepts and ideas related to teaching writing to English Language Learners that are very important to successful teaching and learning. I expressed the information I found in several different ways. A crossword puzzle is made with hidden words all having to do with accommodations for ELLs. I have 3 awards that promote the growth of a teacher and their teaching to English Language Learners. The bumper stickers I have are encouraging! They are for teachers, parents and students. I have a double voice poem that outlines strategies for ELLs while going through the writing process. Finally I have a newsletter that demonstrates important information having to do with helping English Language Learners to be successful!
