I started my research based on one question. What are ways I can help English Language Learners in writing? There are more and more diverse learners nowadays with inadequate or no understanding of the English language. Teachers need to be able to teach students the content required per the state but also needs to work with their new acquisition of the English language. There is a lot to still be learned to reach all students and make sure they reach their full potential.
Engaging young students is the first step in successful writing. They need to feel like it is fun, exciting and personal. There are several ways to encourage children to write. Letting them choice what they want to write about it powerful, it will have their own meaning and purpose. Writing through conversation will help promote fluency. It is always fun to use dramatic play and fun read alouds to promote writing. Students will get to see another type of style of writing and get to explore their personal experiences. Letting students share their work and be proud of their work will make them feel better about themselves and their writing. There are several things a teacher can do daily to promote writing for the students to learn and grow. Teachers can always give extra time, breaks, small group activities, separate rooms for better concentration. They can also provide directions in the students’ native language and have visual supports for better understanding. Finally, positive reinforcement makes a huge difference!
There are plenty of ways teachers can better themselves and grow to accommodate all their students and learning ways. Encouraging writing in many different ways will promote them to enjoy writing and practice. Journaling and logs are great ways to be expressive and learn from their own writing. Writing letters is also a great style of writing to introduce. Letters are fun and they have a story and path, and students will love writing them and waiting for a replied letter. Teachers need to make it clear how much writing and reading are connected and begin a path of thinking and learning. The teacher also wants to keep the students informed of important vocabulary, grammar and spelling. Charts, graphic organizers and good modeling will make things clear for English Language Learners. When working with the writing process teachers need to focus on the pre writing stage mostly. It is the most crucial and the beginning of the entire process. There are several helpful tips to utilize when going through the entire writing process. The pre writing is basic information that like vocabulary, organizing ideas, and plenty of time to explore information. When in the writing stage, students need to use their brainstorming notes to learn the structure. Teacher can provide students with a frame that will make clear what exactly needs to be done. When editing is it important for the teacher to be positive and take it as a great learning experience and possibly pair students up together that will benefit each other. Changes need to be clear and documented so ELLs can refer to them when needed and not just expected to remember them. Finally when publishing the teacher needs to make sure the student has a clear audience, it flows, makes sense and feel real.
All students have the right to write, can write and will succeed with the correct guidance and teaching. Writing is done all day long in the classroom and provides great ways to practice. Warm up activities, noting vocabulary and relying on visual cues is a great way to grow in writing. Communication is extremely important and will make the child feel like they know what is expected of them.
There are several things that need to work together for the success for English Language Learners and writing. Writing needs to be done all the time, the teacher and student need to work together and the truly understand how to write and express themselves and learn and grow. Writing is essential to life and living in America, English is too! ELLs will struggle with the content of the academic but more importantly the language. If the teacher is committed and willing to do as much as possible for the success of the student!
